Birth of ASEAN

The signing of the ASEAN Declaration also known as the Bangkok Declaration on 8 August 1967 marked the first formal agreement to establish ASEAN. The five founding nations of ASEAN were Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. ASEAN was later joined by Brunei in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos & Myanmar in 1997 and Cambodia 1999.

9th ASEAN Summit

ASEAN leaders declared ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) as the goal of regional economic integration by 2020 (Bali Concord 11).

ASEAN leaders affirmed their strong commitment to accelerate the establishment of ASEAN Community by 2015.

ASEAN leaders adopted the AEC Blueprint to implement the AEC by 2015.

AEC Blueprint 2015

Subsequently, the ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting (AEM) held in August 2006 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, agreed to develop “a single and coherent blueprint for advancing the AEC by identifying the characteristics and elements of the AEC by 2015 with clear targets and timelines for implementation of various measures as well as pre-agreed flexibilities to accommodate the interests of all ASEAN Member Countries.”

ASEAN Charter

The ASEAN Charter which came into force in 2008 serves as a legally finding agreement among the 10 ASEAN Member States. It provides legal status and institutional framework towards achieving the ASEAN Community.

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is one of the three community pillars of the ASEAN Community. The AEC is a concerted effort towards regional economic integration.

The AEC Blueprint 2025, adopted by the ASEAN Leaders at the 27th ASEAN Summit on 22 November 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, provides broad directions through strategic measures for the AEC from 2016 to 2025.
